Olive

olive – noun

A fruit of the olive tree, shaped like an oblong or an oval, commonly pressed to produce olive oil.

Note: Can be green or black, with a bitter taste.

Olives are an integral part of the basic Mediterranean diet, and are popular across the globe. Whether eaten whole or as an oil, olives are consumed with practically every meal. The quality and price of olive oil can vary as widely as wine. Due to its popularity and the rate of its consumption, a market has evolved wherein people from all walks of life can enjoy its flavourful benefits. The olive and its tree have played important roles in history, used by kings and athletes in ancient Greece. Olive oil was used to anoint them, to light the flame of the original Olympic Games, and the branches of the olive tree were made into crowns awarded to the victors. Also, the olive branch is recognized as a symbol of peace around the world since biblical times. Given how long these trees and their fruit have been cultivated, there are a high number of pests and diseases to which they are prone. Farmers have to always be on the lookout, diligent regarding any infestation, as olive trees can easily become sick. Climate change is also having a negative impact on olive tree groves, as cold snaps can severely hinder a crop. For the love of olives and their oil, however, growers have developed great skill at helping their groves thrive.
