catch

You would think this would be straight forward, but there are a few instances when a catch is not a catch. A catch does occur when a fielder catches the ball in his hand or glove of a ball in flight and holds on to it. He can't use his cap or any other part of his uniform to catch the ball. It is not a catch, however, if simultaneously or immediately after catching the ball, he collides with a player, or with a wall, or he just falls down, and because of this he drops the ball. It is also not a catch if a fielder touch's a fly ball that then hits another player or an umpire and then is caught by another defensive player, sorry no catch. If the fielder has made the catch and then drops the ball while in the act of throwing, it is still a catch. The umpire will make a judgment call if the fielder held on to the ball and had control of the ball before he started his throwing motion. A catch is legal if any fielder holds the ball, even though juggled, or held by another fielder before it touches the ground. A fielder is allowed to reach over a fence, railing, rope or other line of demarcation to make a catch. A player can jump on top of a railing, or canvas that may be in foul ground. No interference will be called when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, or into the stands to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk. If a fielder, attempting a catch at the edge of the dugout, is "held up" and kept from falling into the dugout by a player or players of either team and the catch is made, it is a good catch.
