Serendipity

The experience of finding one thing while looking for another. The term was first coined by the English writer Horace Walpole in 1754 and is based on a sixteenth-century Italian story, The Three Princes of Serendip, where the heroes travel the world but never find what they are looking for. However, on their travels they make many other interesting discoveries, as indeed do researchers in many fields, to say nothing of dictionary users.
