Amplifier

oscillator

Consumer electronics; Amplifier

A circuit that produces a sustained AC waveform with no external input signal. Oscillators can be designed to produce sine waves, square waves, or other wave shapes. They are typically used as ...

output transformer

Consumer electronics; Amplifier

A transformer used to match the low impedance of a speaker voice coil to the high impedance of a tube output stage. Output transformers consist of at least two windings, a primary and a secondary.

outputs

Consumer electronics; Amplifier

Jacks normally situated on the back of an amp that allow one or more auxiliary speakers to be attached.

overdrive level

Consumer electronics; Amplifier

The level at which distortion begins as a consequence of feeding a device with an overloading signal.

overload

Consumer electronics; Amplifier

A load that exceeds an amplifier’s capability.

parametric equalizer

Consumer electronics; Amplifier

An equalizer with one or more center frequencies that are variable over a particular range, in addition to boost and cut capabilities. See Graphic Equalizer.

parasitic oscillation

Consumer electronics; Amplifier

an unwanted oscillation in a tube amplifier, often at supersonic, inaudible frequencies. Parasitic oscillations can cause all sorts of problems, including overheating output tubes and bad tone.
