Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Contributors in Immunology

Immunology

hypersensitivity

Biology; Immunology

State of reactivity to antigen that is greater than normal; denotes a deleterious rather than a protective outcome. Type I: IgE-mediated; type II: antibody specific for a cellular antigen triggers ...

hypervariable regions

Biology; Immunology

Portions of the Ig or TCR chains that are highly variable in amino acid sequence from one molecule to another, and that together constitute the binding site for antigen.

I region-associated (Ia)

Biology; Immunology

An older term for mouse MHC class II genes and molecules; comprise I-A and I-E.

idiotype

Biology; Immunology

The combined antigenic determinants (idiotopes) expressed in the variable region of antibodies of an individual that are directed at a particular antigen.

immature B cell

Biology; Immunology

IgM IgD - cell in the B cell lineage; easily tolerized by exposure to antigen.

immediate-type hypersensitivity

Biology; Immunology

Type I hypersensitivity reaction occurring within minutes after the interaction of antigen and IgE antibody.

immune adherence

Biology; Immunology

The adherence of particulate antigen coated with C3b to cells expressing C3b receptors; results in enhanced phagocytosis of bacteria by macrophages.
