Solar power

Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.

Contributors in Solar power

Solar power

distributed power

Energy; Solar power

Generic term for any power supply located near the point where the power is used. Opposite of central power. See stand-alone systems.

storage battery

Energy; Solar power

A device capable of transforming energy from electric to chemical form and vice versa. The reactions are almost completely reversible. During discharge, chemical energy is converted to electric ...

distributed systems

Energy; Solar power

Systems that are installed at or near the location where the electricity is used, as opposed to central systems that supply electricity to grids. A residential photovoltaic system is a distributed ...

stratification

Energy; Solar power

A condition that occurs when the acid concentration varies from top to bottom in the battery electrolyte. Periodic, controlled charging at voltages that produce gassing will mix the electrolyte. See ...

donor

Energy; Solar power

In a photovoltaic device, an n-type dopant, such as phosphorus, that puts an additional electron into an energy level very near the conduction band; this electron is easily exited into the conduction ...

string

Energy; Solar power

A number of photovoltaic modules or panels interconnected electrically in series to produce the operating voltage required by the load.

donor level

Energy; Solar power

The level that donates conduction electrons to the system.
