Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

selection response

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The difference between the mean of the individuals selected to be parents and the mean of their offspring. Predicted response = heritability (narrow-sense) × selection differential.

gene imprinting

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The differential expression of a single gene according to its parental origin.

natural selection

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The differential survival and reproduction of organisms because of differences in characteristics that affect their ability to utilize environmental resources.

sporophyte

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The diploid generation in the life cycle of a plant, and that produces haploid spores by meiosis.

polar transport

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The directed movement within plants of compounds (usually endogenous plant growth regulators) mostly in one direction; polar transport overcomes the tendency for diffusion in all directions.

wavelength

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The distance between two corresponding points on any two consecutive waves. For visible light it is very small and is generally measured in nanometres.

source DNA

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The DNA from an organism that contains a target gene; this DNA is used as starting material in a cloning experiment.
