Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

sequencing

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The determination of the order of nucleotides in a DNA or RNA molecule, or that of amino acids in a polypeptide chain.

embryo sexing

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The determination of the sex of an embryo, typically by means of PCR (q.v.) involving amplification from a small sample of embryonic tissue, using primers specific for a locus on the Y chromosome.

conversion

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The development of a somatic embryo into a plant.

tri-nucleotide repeats

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Tandem repeats of three nucleotides that are present in many genes. In several cases, these trinucleotide repeats have undergone expansions in copy number, and that has resulted in inherited ...

layering

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Technique for vegetative propagation, in which new plants produce adventitious roots before being severed from the parent plant.

thermotherapy

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Technique mainly used for virus or mycoplasma elimination. Plants are exposed to elevated temperatures as a treatment. Thermotherapy is used alone or in combination with meristem culture or meristem ...

nodular

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Term commonly used to describe a pebbly (rough) texture of a callus.
