The Star System

The star system is a system by which Hollywood actors must portray a sort of ideal on-screen image of their characters in order to please the general public

The system puts emphasis on the image rather than the acting – How the actors come across on the screen: for example, women are expected to behave like “ladies” and men as “gentlemen”

Hollywood would build an image around actors that didn’t reflect how that person was in real life, and a lot was done to maintain these images
