googie architecture

An architectural style based on futuristic architecture and influenced by car culture, jets, the space age, and the atomic age. Origins come from Southern California during the late 1940's and were most popular among motels, coffee houses, and gas stations.

Features of Googie include upswept roofs, curvaceous, geometric shapes, and bold use of glass, steel, and neon. As well as space age designs such as boomerangs, flying saucers, atoms, and parabolas.

Famous examples of googie architecture include the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign in Las Vegas, Nevada; The TWA Flight Center terminal at JFK airport; the "Theme Building" at Los Angeles International Airport; and the observation towers from the 1964 World's Fair in Queens, New York.
