toros

Toros, literally ´bulls´ is a term popularly used for a variety of Spanish fiestas featuring these large animals in one way or other.

The two main kinds are

1) Corrida de torros - taking place in many villages during the August holiday season and consisting in fencing in parts of the village where then, on particular days, the bulls are ´run´ or led through the streets into a temporary bull ring - usually the village´s main square. The fun is supposed to be in either running with the bulls trying to get as close as possible and not getting harmed or killed (which happens to some every year) or just watching it from you window or perched on the surrounding fence construction.

2) Corrida de toros - a professional corrida taking place in specially constructed stadiums ´Plaza de toros´. The bulls are transported directly into the plaza and to watch the different events that can take place there the spectators have to pay.

In majority of both cases, the final purpose is to kill the animal.

Whereas the fun of it all for the people taking part, especially in those parts where killing of the animals is not involved, is, after some effort, understandable, the fun the bulls are supposed to have while being provoked, stressed, hurt and in some cases killed, remains, however, a secret.
