European Union

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 27 member countries in Europe. Formally established in 1993 after the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty by members of the European Community, the EU acts as the governing body of the European Economic Community in the area of foreign and security policy, and provides for the creation of a central European bank and the adoption of a common currency, the Euro.
