The pattern formed on a surface illuminated by radiation (usually light) passed through a small circular aperture. The pattern is caused by Fraunhofer diffraction and consists of a set of alternately dark and light rings. It is the form the image of a point source would have if formed by an aberration free optical system (sometimes called a diffraction limited optical system). The intensity of the radiation at a distance r from the center of the pattern is proportional to (2 J1(z)/ z)², where z is (2ðr siná)/ë. á is the half angle at the apex of the cone of rays forming the image and ë is the wavelength of the radiation. J1(z) is the first degree Bessel function of the first kind.

For any aerial photograph that is one of a series in a strip of photographs taken during a single flight, that central part of the photograph delimited by the bisectors of overlaps with adjacent photographs. On a vertical photograph, all images within the effective area have less displacement than their conjugate images on adjacent photographs.

One of the corrections which must be made to the readings of a barometric altimeter to obtain true altitude. Among these corrections are a correction for difference of local temperature from ground temperature and a correction for error in the zero point of the altimeter.
Industry:Earth science
Radial aerotriangulation done by computations in which nadir points are used as radial centers.
Industry:Earth science
The average altitude of a satellite above the surface of the primary body.
Industry:Earth science
An azimuth determined by solving the astronomical triangle with latitude, declination and angular elevation given.
Industry:Earth science
An instrument, carried on balloons or rockets, that measures and records pressure, temperature, and relative humidity of the air through which it is carried. Before the radiosonde was developed, the aerometeorograph was extensively used to investigate the upper atmosphere.
