Gaps in body panels that are barely visible (with joints as narrow as possible), are a sign of careful workmanship and body quality. The most important characteristics of build quality, however, are invisible: they include body stiffness and the body’s inherent passive safety (a "rigid" occupant cell). In addition, effective corrosion protection is also a part of quality.

The energy-absorbing bumper system can withstand minor parking impacts at speeds not exceeding 5 mph without any significant damage. The bumper’s plastic surface can restore itself after point loadings so that repair is normally not required. For that reason they are also called “self-restoring bumpers”.

Camshaft adjustment varies the opening times of the valves to suit all operating conditions. This ensures optimum charge cycles within a wide range of engine speeds and loads. Fuel consumption and pollutant emissions are reduced, torque and smoothness increased.

The “cat” generally refers to the car’s complete exhaust emission control system. The catalytic converter contains an effective catalyst (usually precious metal like platinum or rhodium) on a ceramic or metallic base, a housing, and, depending on the design, various controls to regulate the process. Also depending on its design, the catalytic converter oxidizes carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water, and/or reduces oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen and oxygen gas. Efficient catalytic converters reduce the level of pollutants in the exhaust by as much as 90 percent. Cars with spark-ignition engines use 3-way catalytic converters. Depending on the type of engine, there may be either one or two main converters and up to four pre-converters.

The cd value is the aerodynamic drag coefficient. It is used as a comparative value to assess the aerodynamic efficiency of the shape of a body. Since this value is a coefficient, it is dimensionless. It is calculated from the force measured as a constant speed and the projected surface (frontal area) of the object being measured. The lower the cd value, the more smoothly the vehicle passes through the surrounding air. (See also: aerodynamic drag.)

To compensate for the different wheel velocities between the front and rear suspensions, quattro permanent all-wheel drive has an additional center differential between the front and rear suspensions. It prevents stress build-up in the drive train and automatically distributes power. The tires with better traction get more power, and the transmission of power is more effective and safer due to improved road grip.

The central locking system locks and unlocks the doors as well as the luggage and engine compartments. When the doors are locked, inside release knobs are all lowered. If airbags inflate in an accident, all doors are automatically unlocked. Additional safety settings offer extra convenience: automatic locking of the luggage compartment or safety central locking. All doors and the luggage compartment are then locked automatically when the car is driven at a speed of 6 mph or faster. The luggage compartment locks when the speed is greater than 3 mph, and the safety central locking only initially allows only the driver’s door to be opened. A second opening movement opens the remaining doors as well as the tailgate.

When intake air is compressed in the turbocharger, its temperature rises sharply. As a result, air density is reduced and the cylinders receive less fresh air than the system’s boost pressure prescribes. The risk of knock in spark-ignition engines also increases. These drawbacks are countered by charge-air intercooling, which passes the air leaving the turbocharger through a special cooler, increasing air intake as thermal load is reduced.

Comfort seats with memory function are part of the seat concept that was originally developed for the Audi A8, and are currently available in other Audi vehicles. An upper backrest adjustment function is integrated into the backrest, making it possible to angle the top third of the backrest to provide better support for the shoulders. Rear knee room has also been further increased thanks to the seats' slim design. The seats also have a lumbar support that can be adjusted in four directions, a memory function for both front seats, electrically adjustable head restraints and electric belt height adjusters. Like the standard seats that can be adjusted in eight directions, the comfort seats also have electric fore/aft, height, inclination and backrest angle adjustment. All front seat versions in the Audi A8 also have crash-activated head restraints to prevent injuries to the neck. Switches for adjusting the seats are located in an easily accessible position on the side trim and can be operated intuitively.

The coming home and leaving home features offer increased comfort and security around your Audi. When exiting the vehicle, the front fog lights, tail lights and license plate light remain on for an extended period after locking the doors (coming home). When approaching the vehicle and unlocking the doors via the radio-operated remote control, these exterior lights are also switched on, to light the way to the vehicle in dark situations.
For Audi vehicles equipped with multimedia interface (MMI), the coming home delay time is adjustable, for example, to coincide with the time needed to walk from the vehicle to the front door.
