A mixer tube used in a superheterodyne radio receiver. A pentagrid converter tube has five grids, a cathode, a plate, and a filament.
The incoming radio-frequency signal is applied to the signal grid, and a signal from a local oscillator is applied to the oscillator grid. The two signals mix and form two additional signals. The frequency of one is the sum of the two, and the frequency of the other is the difference between the two. The other three grids in the pentagrid tube are: two screen grids and one suppressor grid.
Industry:Aviation
A mixing procedure in which the pigment in a can of paint is thoroughly mixed with the vehicle. The paint is poured back and forth between two containers until the pigment and the vehicle are completely and uniformly mixed.
Industry:Aviation
A mixture of different elements or ingredients that have been merged into a single body as a physical mixture, rather than a chemical compound. Concrete is an example of an amalgam of sand, portland cement, and gravel.

A mixture of water and methanol, which is injected into the carburetor of an aircraft reciprocating engine to prevent detonation when the engine is producing its maximum power.
The methanol is used primarily to prevent the water freezing at high altitude, and a small amount of water-soluble oil is added for corrosion prevention.

A modified image picked up by a miniature TV camera in the end of a fiber optic probe. This image is converted into a digital electronic signal that eliminates unwanted portions of the viewed area and allows the desired image to be enhanced for clearer viewing.

A MOdulator-DEModulator used to connect two computers by way of telephone lines. Digital information from one computer is changed into tones for transmission over the phone lines. This is the function of the modulator. At the receiver end, the tones are changed back into digital information for the other computer to process. This is called demodulation.
Industry:Aviation
A moment divided by a constant, such as 10, 100, 1,000, or an even larger number. The use of a moment index allows weight and balance computations to be made using smaller numbers, and this decreases the chance for errors.
Industry:Aviation
A moment, or rotational force, that causes a body to rotate in a counterclockwise direction.
