Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
Instrument flight by reference to only a limited number of flight instruments. Partial-panel flight uses the airspeed indicator, turn and slip indicator, or turn coordinator, and clock to keep the aircraft straight and level and to maneuver it. Partial-panel flight assumes the attitude gyro and horizontal situation indicator (or gyro horizon and directional gyro) to be inoperative.
Industry:Aviation
Insulated electrical wire enclosed in a conducting braid, usually made of tinned copper. The braid is grounded so any electromagnetic radiation picked up by the braid is carried to ground. This prevents interference with the signal being carried in the conductor.
Industry:Aviation
Interference of radio reception by the radiation of electromagnetic energy from a piece of electronic equipment, or from conductors carrying high-frequency alternating current.
Industry:Aviation
Interference with the operation of radios, televisions, and other types of electronic equipment caused by electromagnetic radiation. RFI is caused by spurious (unwanted and unintentional) radiation of electromagnetic energy. Improperly filtered amateur radio transmitters, radio-frequency electrical heaters, and certain types of medical equipment cause radio-frequency interference.
Industry:Aviation
Interplane struts installed between the upper and lower wings of a biplane near the wing tips. N-struts get their name from the fact that the three pieces of these struts are arranged in the shape of the letter N.
Industry:Aviation
Invisible electromagnetic radiation whose wavelength is between 7,800 and 1,000,000 angstroms, just slightly longer than the longest wavelength of visible light. Infra-red radiation is used for heating.
Industry:Aviation
Invisible lines of force passing between the poles of a magnet. These invisible lines are considered to leave the north pole of a magnet and enter its south pole, and they always follow the path of least resistance. Lines of flux form complete loops through the magnet and across the gap between the poles, and the loops never cross one another. When an electrical conductor cuts across the lines of magnetic flux, a voltage is produced that causes current to flow in it.
Industry:Aviation
Inward extensions from the field frame of an electric motor or generator around which the field coils are mounted. The pole shoes are fastened to the field frame to form a very low reluctance path for the lines of magnetic flux. The pole shoes are shaped in such a way that the density of the flux across the air gap between the pole shoe and the armature is uniform.

Iron that contains carbon and silicon. Cast iron is heavy, brittle, and hard, and cannot be formed by forging. It is used for making objects that do not require a great deal of strength and can be made by pouring the molten iron into molds. The main use of cast iron in aircraft technology is in the manufacture of piston rings for reciprocating engines.
Industry:Aviation
Isotopes of hydrogen having one or two neutrons in the nucleus. Isotopes with one neutron are called deuterium 2H, and isotopes with two neutrons are called tritium 3H.
