The average pressure inside the cylinder of a reciprocating engine during the power stroke.
BMEP, measured in pounds per square inch, relates to the torque produced by the engine, and can be calculated when the brake horsepower and RPM of the engine are known.
Industry:Aviation
The average slope, measured in percent, between two ends or points on a runway. Runway gradient is depicted on government aerodrome sketches when the total runway gradient exceeds 0.3%.
Industry:Aviation
The average weight of aircraft of the same model that have the same equipment installed. Operations under 14 CFR Part 121 and 135 may use fleet weight, rather than having to weigh each individual aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
The axis about which the pitch angle of a rotor blade is varied. The feathering axis is the same as the spanwise axis.
Industry:Aviation
The back edge of an airfoil, such as a wing, a helicopter rotor, or a propeller blade. It is the edge that passes through the air last.
Industry:Aviation
The balance of a rotating object, such as a wheel or propeller spinner. The condition of dynamic balance is checked with the object rotating. If an unbalanced condition causes vibration, the balancing equipment shows the amount of weight and the location of the weight needed to stop the vibration. Wheels and tires, as well as propellers, are dynamically balanced.
Industry:Aviation
The bands of frequencies on either side of the carrier frequency in amplitude modulated (AM) radio transmission. The bandwidth of a transmitted radio signal includes the carrier frequency (the frequency produced by the oscillator in the transmitter) and the frequencies of both the lower and the upper sidebands.
The frequency of the lower sideband is the carrier frequency minus the highest audio frequency used to modulate the carrier. The frequency of the upper sideband is the carrier frequency plus the highest audio frequency used to modulate the carrier.
Industry:Aviation
The basic forces acting on an aircraft in flight that are caused by the movement of air over the surfaces.
Thrust acts forward, drag acts rearward, and lift acts vertically upward. The weight of the aircraft produces a force that acts vertically downward. A downward-acting aerodynamic force produced by the horizontal tail surfaces balances the weight force about the center of gravity to provide longitudinal stability.
Industry:Aviation
The basic foundation of all the systems of mathematics.
Operations in arithmetic are: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of both whole numbers and fractions. Arithmetic deals only with real numbers.
