The ancient part of the city and also downtown is set over the water. This achievement is due to the brilliant mind of one of King José's minister named Marquês de Pombal who, after an enormous earthquake that stroke the city in 1765, successfully managed to build a perfect structure of wooden poles and beams where poles act as bearing elements from Rossio to Praça do Comércio.
