1893 Veuve Clicquot

The "priceless" 1893 bottle of Veuve Clicquot that had been locked away in Scottish Torosay Castle, Isle of Mull, for 115 years. In July of 2008, owner Chris James made the find after employing a specialist locksmith to cut a key and open an antique piece of furniture in the Scottish residence of Torosay Castle. Mr. James discovered a treasure chest of alcoholic delights, amoung which was a bottle of 1893 Veuve Clicquot in near perfect condition, including its famous hallmark yellow label. It turned out the aged sideboard was a personal wine cabinet that had been locked since the late 19th Century that als contained bottles of claret, brandy and a port decanter.

Mr. James contacted Veuve Clicquot Champagne house directly and was informed the bottle was the oldest ad only known such bottle in existence in existence. The bottle is considered by many to be priceless and is now on display at the Veuve Clicquot visitor centre in Reims, France. Ultimately, champagne is all about exclusivity, and by that measure as there is only one example in existence, this bottle of 1893 Veuve Clicquot is the most exclusive champagne in the world.
