Bai Yun

Born September 7, 1991, Bai Yue is a female giant panda on loan at the San Diego Zoo from China. Bai Yun, whose name means "white cloud," was the first panda to be successfully born at the Wolong Giant Panda Research Center in China. Bai Yun's mother, Dong Dong, was caught in the wild and was introduced to her father Pan Pan at the giant panda facility in Sichuan, China.

Bai Yun rose to further international fame since arriving at the San Diego Zoo on September 10, 1996, she gave birth to sixth surviving baby pandas, the most of any female pandas outside the endangered species' native China. In the spring of 1999, Bai Yun was artificially inseminated with sperm from Shi Shi, the male panda at San Diego Zoo. On August 21, 1999, Bai Yun gave birth to her first cub, Hua Mei, who is also the first giant panda born in the United States to survive to adulthood.

On March 13, 2013, Bai Yun bit a keeper on the arm, requiring the keeper to be rushed to the hospital. The unusual incident occurred when Bai Yun was able to push open a gate to the exhibit. As keepers were trying to herd her back into her sleeping habitat, the panda bit a female keeper on the arm.
