(1914 – 1994) Novelist best known for his 1952 novel, Invisible Man. Set between 1930 and 1950, and covering some of the events in Ellison’s own life, Invisible Man struck a chord with many African Americans, who felt that white America failed to see them, except only as stereotyped characters or figments of their own imaginations. Born in Oklahoma, Ellison had attended Tuskegee Institute before moving to New York City in 1936 to become a writer. After his first work was published in Richard Wright’s journal, Ellison worked with the New York Writer’s Project. In 1999 Ellison’s long-awaited unfinished novel, Juneteenth, drafts of which had previously been destroyed by fire, was edited for publication by John F. Callahan.
