A high residue diet is a diet high in dietary fiber, which aids in bowel movement. A high fiber diet appears to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease. Women should aim for at least 21 to 25 grams of fiber daily. Men should try for 30 to 38 grams daily. High fiber foods include whole grain breads and cereals, vegetables and fruits (especially dried fruits such as apricots, prunes and raisins).
