Is HTTP a connectionoriented protocal or a connectionless protocal?

I heard a lot of people say that HTTP is a connectionless protocal, but to implement a HTTP session for example, need the client to establish a connection with the HTTP server and keep the connection for the interaction, right? In this way, HTTP is more appropriated to be considered as a connection-oriented protocal.
