Arts & crafts comprises a multitude of activities and hobbies that involve making things with one's hands, usually from scratch. They can be sub-divided into 'handicrafts'( or traditional crafts ) that are fashioned in an old style using long practised techniques, and the rest which are more modern inventions that have become recent trends or fads.

slumping

Process of creating ceramic wares with a slump-mold. Firing defect where glassy-phase begins to dissolve sintered structure in clay, causing it to sag and deform.
slump-mold

A mold over which a moist clay slab is slumped in order to create a vessel form.
filter pressing

Process used to change slip into solid clay. Clay slip is forced thro a special cloth to remove water.
slurry

Very thick clay slip, often used for joining clay pieces after scoring surfaces.
fire clay

Highly refractory secondary clays with minimal fluxes and usually fairly coarse particle size - Low shrinkage, buff-color, often non-plastic.
soak

Allowing the pottery to remain at the peak temperature for a time period. This allows all positions in the kiln to reach approx the same temperature
