high-bypass turbofan engine
Aviation; Aeronautics
A turbofan engine in which the fan moves more than four times as much air as is moved by the core engine compressor. This type of engine is said to have a bypass ratio of more than 4:1.
medium-bypass turbofan engine
Aviation; Aeronautics
A turbofan engine with a bypass ratio of between 2:1 and 4:1. This means that the fan moves two to four times as much air as the core engine.
forward-fan engine
Aviation; Aeronautics
A turbofan engine with some of its low-pressure compressor blades extended. These extended blades act as a fan and force air around the outside of the gas-generator portion of the engine. Most modern ...
aft-fan engine
Aviation; Aeronautics
A turbofan engine with the fan constructed as an extension of some of the turbine blades, rather than as an extension of the compressor blades. This fan pulls large volumes of air around the outside ...
vectored-thrust engine
Aviation; Aeronautics
A turbojet or turbofan engine whose exhaust nozzle is mounted on a swivel in such a way that it may be rotated in flight to produce forward, vertically upward, or rearward thrust.
single-shaft turboprop engine
Aviation; Aeronautics
A turboprop engine in which the propeller reduction gears are driven by the same shaft which drives the compressor for the gas generator.
