Ceramics

flame-flashing

Arts & crafts; Ceramics

Surface effects caused by direct flame contact on wares.

solvent

Arts & crafts; Ceramics

An agent which acts to accelerate the dissolution of a more resistant material. In glaze-maturation, the flux-glass-former combination acts as a solvent upon alumina.

flame-rectification system

Arts & crafts; Ceramics

A burner system with automated re-ignition feature which immediate restores flame should it become extinguished. Usually incorporates a fire-eye ultra-violet sensor to monitor burner flame.

spalling

Arts & crafts; Ceramics

Defect in repeatedly fired clay materials where outer layers shrink and peel away - most often occurs in kiln hot-face when refractories are repeatedly fired beyond their rated temperature.

flame-retention tip

Arts & crafts; Ceramics

Gas burner tip which causes turbulence in moving stream of gas and air, intermixing them, speeding combustion, holding flame at burner tip, preventing both flame-off and back-burning.

specific gravity

Arts & crafts; Ceramics

The weight or density of a liquid measured in proportion to that of water. A glaze with a specific gravity of 1.2 is 1.2 times as dense as water per unit of measure. See HYDROMETER.

flame-ware

Arts & crafts; Ceramics

Wares made to stand stove-top heat. Explosions from trapped moisture, and resulting lawsuits have caused studio flame-ware to disappear from the domestic market.
