Terms of or pertaining to the bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on a roughly circular field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. Each team takes it in turn to bat, in which they attempt to accumulate as many runs as possible, while the other team fields, attempting to prevent the batting team scoring runs.

square short leg

A fielding position indicating the player is 90 degrees to the pitch. Close to a line perpendicular to the pitch, through the batsmen. There are also Square Leg or Deep Square Leg positions.

The way in which the batsmen position himself when getting ready to hit. Batsmen usually keep their feet about 8 inches apart and on either side of the popping crease.

This is a description of the position of the wicketkeeper who will be 10 to 20 yards behind the wicket. This is done with a fast bowler, so the wicketkeeper has more time to react.

This is a description of the position of the wicketkeeper immediately behind the wicket. This is done with a slow bowler to be in position to perform a stumping.

sticky wicket

This is a description of a wet pitch, drying in the sun, on which batting is awfully difficult. Now that most pitches are covered during rain storms, this does not happen often.

stone walling

This is a tactic used by a team that is far down on runs against the other team but if they are able to stay at bat long enough they might be able to force a draw.
