The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

outflow

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The volume of growing cells that is removed from a bioreactor during a continuous fermentation process.

root zone

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The volume of soil or growing medium containing the roots of a plant. In soil science, the depth of the soil profile in which roots are normally found.

weight per volume (w/v)

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The weight of a constituent in 100 cm 3 of solution, expressed as a percentage.

fresh weight

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The weight, including the water content, of a plant or plant part at the time of harvest. cf wet weight.

yeast cloning vectors

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The yeasts, and especially Saccaromyces cerevisiae , are favourite organisms in which to clone and express DNA. They are eukaryotes, and so can splice out introns, the non-coding sequences in the ...

good manufacturing practice (GMP)

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

They are codes of practice designed to reduce to a minimum the chance of accidents which could affect a manufactured product. The GMP prescriptions are quite voluminous, but boil down to a few key ...

good laboratory practice (GLP)

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

They are codes of practice designed to reduce to a minimum the chance of accidents which could affect a research project. The GLP prescriptions are quite voluminous, but boil down to a few key ...
