Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

stringency

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Reaction conditions - notably temperature, salt concentration(s) and pH - that dictate the annealing of single-stranded DNA/DNA, DNA/RNA and RNA/RNA hybrids. At high stringency, duplexes form only ...

carotenoid

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Red to yellow pigments responsible for the characteristic colour of many plant organs or fruits, such as tomatoes, carrots, etc. Oxidation products of carotene are called xanthophylls. Carotenoids ...

hypoplastic

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Reduction in plant growth or development (dwarfing, stunting) resulting from an abnormal condition associated with a disease or nutritional stress.

inbreeding depression

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Reduction in vigour, yield, etc., of a population that is commonly seen as the level of inbreeding increases. The traits that show greatest inbreeding depression are those that are most closely ...

organic

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Referring in chemistry to compounds containing carbon, many of which have been in some manner associated with living organisms.

differentially permeable

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Referring to a membrane, through which different substances diffuse at different rates; some substances may be unable to diffuse through such a membrane.

universality

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Referring to the genetic code, the codons have the same meaning, with minor exceptions, in virtually all species.
