Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

M13 strand

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The single-stranded DNA molecule that is present in the infective form of bacteriophage M13.

sticky ends

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The single-stranded nucleotide sequence left on a restriction fragment by type II restriction enzymes that cut each strand at a separate location. These unpaired regions are available for ...

cohesive ends

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

cap site

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The site in a gene where translation is initiated, a.k.a. translation initiation site.

peptidyl-tRNA binding site

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The site on a ribosome that hosts the tRNA to which an amino acid for the growing polypeptide chain is attached.

p-site

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The site on a ribosome that hosts the tRNA to which an amino acid for the growing polypeptide chain is attached.

position effect

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The situation in which a change in phenotype results from the change of the position of a gene or group of genes.
