Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

ionizing radiation

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that results in the production of positive and negative charges (ion pairs) in molecules. X-rays and gamma rays are examples of ionizing radiation.

ultraviolet light

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths from about 100 to 400 nm; between ionizing radiation (X-rays) and visible light. UV is absorbed by DNA and is highly mutagenic to ...

ultraviolet radiation (uv)

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths from about 100 to 400 nm; between ionizing radiation (X-rays) and visible light. UV is absorbed by DNA and is highly mutagenic to ...

founder principle

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The possibility that a new, small, isolated population may be genetically different from the "parent" population, because the founding individuals (being a small, random sample from the large, ...

artificial selection

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The practice of choosing individuals from a population for reproduction, usually because these individuals possess one or more desirable traits.

cell plate

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The precursor of the cell wall, formed as cytokinesis starts during cell division. The cell plate develops in the region of the equatorial plate and arises from membranes in the cytoplasm.

supercoiled plasmid

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

The predominant in vivo form of plasmid, in which the plasmid is coiled around histone-like proteins. Supporting proteins are stripped away during extraction from the bacterial cell, causing the ...
