Ice Hockey is a team sport played on an ice rink in which players skate on ice skates while using a wooden stick to hit a rubber puck into the opposing team's goal. Hockey is a full contact sport and full body padding must be worn.

empty net goal

A goal that is scored when the opposing goalie is not on the ice. Goalies are often pulled toward the end of a game if their team is down by a goal or two, so their team can have an extra attacker.

healthy scratch

An uninjured player on the roster who does not dress for a game. Only 20 players are allowed to dress for a game. Players who are not dressed are considered scratches.

even strength

A term that means both teams have the same number of players on the ice. If both teams have five skaters on the ice then they are referred to as being full strength.

goal line save

Sports; Ice hockey

A save that is made just before the puck crosses the goal line. These saves are often made in dramatic fashion and may require video review to make sure the puck did not cross the goal line.

goal judge

An off-ice official who signals when a goal has been scored by turning on a red light behind the net. In today's game they generally sit directly behind the glass behind the net, however in the past ...
