Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Immunology

lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells

Biology; Immunology

The heterogeneous population of lym phocytes, including NK cells, derived from the in vitro cytokine-driven activation of peripheral blood lymphocytes from a tumor-bearing patient.

lymphoma

Biology; Immunology

Lymphocyte tumors in lymphoid or other tissues; not generally found in the blood.

macrophages

Biology; Immunology

Large phagocytic leukocytes found in tissues; derived from blood monocytes.

major histocompatibility complex (MHC)

Biology; Immunology

A cluster of genes encoding polymorphic cell-surface molecules (MHC class I and class II) that are involved in antigen presentation to T cells. These molecules also play a major role in ...

mast cell

Biology; Immunology

Bone-marrow derived granule-containing cell found in connective tissues; releases mediators such as histamine and cytokines following cell activation; plays a major role in allergic responses.

mature B cell

Biology; Immunology

B cells with IgM and IgD on their surface.

membrane attack complex

Biology; Immunology

Terminal components of the complement cascade (C7-C9) which form a pore on the surface of a target cell, resulting in cell damage or death.
