Jazz

A style of music characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm. It emerged at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions.

tritone substitution

The substitution of a chord whose root is a tritone away. In turnarounds it's common to do this for any of the chords.

line

(1) A melody of successive, single notes. (2) A composed melody over predetermined chord changes, such as 'a line on Cherokee'. (3) One of the different voices, such as the bass or the melody.

A term used by the Beboppers to deride players and fans of older styles, especially trad. Someone whose tastes are not up to date.

tritone

The interval of three whole steps, i.e. An augmented 4th or diminished 5th.

run

Music; Jazz

A rapid descending, or ascending, usually right-hand passage on the piano in the form of a continuous scale, or a scale with variations.
