Jet engines

Engines that propel aircrafts by using discharged gases to produce forward thrust. The thrust is generated by jet propulsion of a rearward discharge of fluid, usually combustion gases, in accordance with Newton's laws of motion.

Contributors in Jet engines

Jet engines

tachometer generator

Aviation; Jet engines

Device that supplies power at a frequency proportional to the driven speed which drives the synchronous motors in the indicator.

time between overhauls (TBO)

Aviation; Jet engines

This is the established time frame before a major engine repair by the engine manufacturer.

test cell

Aviation; Jet engines

Building, usually concrete, that contains both a control room and an engine room, used for testing engines. The test cell is at the manufacturer's; a mobile engine-test unit is used in the field.

thermodynamic cycle

Aviation; Jet engines

Succession of processes which involve changes in temperature, pressure, and density in which the substance acts as a means of transformation of energy. See Otto and Brayton cycles.

thrust

Aviation; Jet engines

The driving force of a propeller in the line of its shaft or the forward force produced in reaction to the gases expelled rearward from a jet or rocket engine.

overall pressure ratio

Aviation; Jet engines

The ratio of the stagnation pressure as measured at the front and rear of the compressor of a gas turbine engine. Generally speaking, a higher overall pressure ratio implies higher efficiency, but ...

thrust-to-weight ratio

Aviation; Jet engines

A ratio of thrust to weight of a rocket, jet engine, propeller engine, or a vehicle propelled by such an engine. It is a dimensionless quantity and is an indicator of the performance of the engine or ...
