A synthetic form of estrogen once given to women to prevent miscarriage. The daughter of a woman who took DES while pregnant with her may have an incompetent cervix.

stripping of the membranes

A technique used to encourage the onset of labor. The practitioner inserts a finger between the membranes and the wall of the uterus to loosen the membranes from the wall.
