backflow
Natural environment; Water
The flow of water in a medium in a direction opposite to normal flow. Flow is often returned into the system by backflow, if the wastewater in a purification system is severely contaminated.
electrical charge
Natural environment; Water
The charge on an ion, declared by its number of electrons. A Cl- ion is in fact a Cl atom which has acquired an electron, and a Ca++ ion is a Ca atom, which has lost two electrons.
ion exchange
Natural environment; Water
The replacement of undesirable ions with a certain charge by desirable ions of the same charge in a solution, by an ion-permeable absorbent.
potentiometric surface
Natural environment; Water
The surface to which water in an aquifer can rise by hydrostatic pressure.
tertiary treatment
Natural environment; Water
Advanced cleaning of wastewater that goes beyond the secondary or biological stage, removing nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and most BOD and suspended solids. Also known as "tertiary ...
electrodialysis
Natural environment; Water
A process that uses electrical current applied to permeable membranes to remove minerals from water. Often used to desalinize salty or brackish water.
