Accordion

accordion—noun

A musical instrument played by stretching and squeezing with the hands to work a central bellows that blows air over metal reeds, the melody and chords being sounded by buttons or keys.

Review:

The accordion is a musical instrument that gained popularity very quickly. It was in invented by Friedrich Buschmann in 1822 in Berlin, and was popular in Europe for many years. As Europeans emigrated to countries around the world, the accordion followed suit. In the country music genre, the accordion is used primarily in conjunto, tejano and cowboy music. It is also commonly used in popular music. The accordion is a portable wind instrument that has two reed organs connected by folding bellows. By expanding and contracting, the bellows provide air which in turn creates a vibration in the reed organs which produces the sounds. The instrument is also known as a squeeze box because of the expanding and contracting bellows. On the right side there is a keyboard which plays melody notes and on the left side are buttons that produce bass notes and full chords. The accordion produces a very rich, reedy and organ-like sound that can be soft or very loud depending on the song.
