American tonda squash

The American tonda squash is part of the large and varied Cucurbitaceae family, and the Cucurbita pepo botanical name. The American tonda squash is also known as tonda Padana squash or Americana tonda, and American Tondo. This squash is believed to have been developed in the Padana area of north-western Italy and is known for its storage ability.

The American tonda is a small to medium sized, pumpkin shaped winter squash. The rind has a dark green background with light-green and orange mottling and alternating grey and green stripes along wide ridges. The inner flesh is dry, orange in color and has a sweet flavor making it an excellent ingredient for soup, gnocchi and roasting. American tonda squash is most flavorful and tender when harvested young and still retain the two-toned, speckled green and orange color.
