Gold Coin Building

Also known as the Copper Coin Building or Lucky Coin Building, the Gold Coin Building is a 138 meter (453 feet) and 33 story skyscraper located on the western shore of the Pearl River in Guangzhou. The building's shape is patterned after the ancient Chinese copper coin, which also represents good luck and fortune. The building's circular façade has an exterior diameter of 146.6 meters, and an interior diameter of 47 meters. When reflected in the river, the circle shape becomes a figure of eight - a lucky number in Chinese culture.

The project broke ground on January 3, 2010. The technical and structural complexity of an extremely large round building means that very little of the building actually touches the ground. The sheer scale of the floating disk led to many extensions of the project's completion date. The building's exterior reflects the interior functions of the building, so that the internal workings can be seen from the exterior. The two perpendicular cylinders link the lobby with the trading floor. The massive round copper structures on the exterior provide the primary structural support, with slanting copper pillars bear the weight of the floors.

Spanning 850,000 square meters of space, the landmark building serves as the new headquarters of Guangdong Hongda Xingye Group and the Guangdong Plastics Exchange.
