Japanese black radish

A Japanese black radish, also known has Kuro Daikon, Radis noir and Spanish radish, it is a member of Brassicaceae. The scientific name is Raphanus sativus niger and it is a herbaceous plant that is usually biannual with coarse purplish-red leaves.

The skin of Japanese black radishes is black or dull brown and slightly dry and rough. The form is small and elongated; they grow on average seven inches in length and two inches in diameter. Its flesh is white, dense and crisp that has a low water content. It offers a spicy flavour especially when it is eaten raw. When it is cooked, it has a similar taste and texture to white potatoes.

Nutritional Value

A Japanese black radish can be the remedy for your skin and hair. It is rich in vitamin C that can work as a natural antioxidant for your skin, and vitamin B that can help skin disorders caused by fungal or bacterial infection. Also it can stimulate your hair roots that can enhance the blood circulation of your scalp to nourish your hair.

Serving Ideas

Because the unique contrast of the black skin and the white flesh of a Japanese black radish can add an interesting accent to a salad, it can be sliced thin and added to a salad without peeling the skin. In addition, it can be simply steamed, grilled and fried as well as adding to soups, stews, miso soups, tempura, sautéed dishes, marinated dishes and pickles. For storing, cut off stems and leaves, wrap them in a newspaper and store them in a cold dark place or vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. It is best to use them as soon as you get them, however they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.

Geography/History

Although Japanese black radishes are rare in Japan, they are popular in Europe, such as France. Japanese black radishes are produced in Hokkaido, Chiba prefecture and Aomori prefecture. The daikon has been used in a Japanese expression, "Daikon Ashi" which means thick legs that was used to tease women from the Edo period.

Seasons/Availability

Japanese black radishes are available in the fall and winter months.
