Saab Gripen

The Saab Gripen is a lightweight single-engine multirole fighter manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. It is a low-cost, low maintenance 4th generation fighter jet with a top speed of Mach 2.

Designed to replace the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen in the Swedish Air Force, the Gripen features delta wings and canards, as well as relaxed stability design and fly-by-wire technology. It is powered by the Volvo Aero RM12 engine, a derivative of General Electric F404, with modifications in the fan, afterburner flame holder and accessories, partly for making it more suitable to a single engine aircraft.

The Gripen is equipped with an Ericsson PS-05/A pulse Doppler radar capable of identifying anchored ships and following road traffic for at least 90 km. It’s also able to detect typical fighter sized targets at 120 km.

Compared to the U.S. F-16 fighter jets, the Gripen is a good choice as an aire-to-are fighter with good air-to-ground capabilities to defend the required airspace. The F-16 is a good choice when longer range and good load are factored into the consideration.
