The Franklin’s Tale is the twelfth tale in Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. A woman in ancient Brittany is waiting for the return of her husband from England, but worried that he may crash on the rocks on the coast. A young man, Aurelius, is in love with her and she promises him that he can have her body is he clears the rocks from the coast. Instead, he hires a magician to make it appear that the rocks have disappeared. When her husband returns, he says she must keep her promise but Aurelius absolves her of any obligation. In turn, the magician absolves Aurelius of the money he owes.
