A computer system which allows the user to tap into the internet. It was created by Tim BernersLee, a British computer expert, while working at the atomic research centre cern (Conseil Européen de Recherches Nucléaires) near Geneva in Switzerland. Berners-Lee found that information kept falling out of the organization’s corporate memory and having to be reinvented at a later date, so he created a form of classification using hypertext that gave the user easy access to all the information the organization possessed. When the web was made generally available in 1992 it vastly expanded the use of the internet.
