During the 2014 APEC summit in Beijing, China embarked on an unprecedented campaign to engineer blue skies for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in November. Measures taken included special regulations ordering cars with license plates ending in odd or even numbers off the roads on alternate days to cut traffic and emissions, a ban on crop stem burning and garbage incineration in five provinces around Beijing, as well as the temporary shutdown of steel mills and other pollution-heavy factories within a 200 KM radius of the Chinese capital. The comprehensive measures also include the installation of pollution watchers for every 20 acre of land as far as Shandong Province. The extreme pollution control efforts eventually paid off with the official PM 2.5 reading holding below 150 throughout the APEC summit.
