amerasian

Amerasian is a person born in Asia, to a U.S. military father and an Asian mother. Several countries have significant populations of Amerasians, most noteably Philippines where the the largest U.S. air and naval bases outside the U.S. mainland were situated. But except Philippines there are many other countries where great number of Amerasians can be found, i.e. Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and other islands in Pacific ocean.

In 1982, US Congress passed a law giving preferential immigration status to Amerasian children born in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos but not the Philippines. The only way Philippine Amerasians can become citizens is if their fathers file paternity claims before they turn 18.

In Philippines the Amerasians are often being discriminated because of their skin colour. March 4 has been designated as Amerasian Day in the Philippines.
