area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB)
Areas in England and Wales that, for reasons of scenery, interest and amenity, enjoy special protection under the terms of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. AONBs are generally smaller than national parks and are the responsibility of local planning authorities, which have powers for 'the preservation and enhancement of natural beauty'. Today there are 41 AONBs in England and Wales (including the Cotswolds, the South Downs and the Cornish coast), and they cover around 15,500 km2 (about 10% of the total land area).
