Large, long, and continuously cast pieces of steel. They are usually cut-to-length immediately after casting.

After reheating, blooms are used to roll medium and large sections, as well as large sheet piling, and rails etc. Sometimes when large “H” or “I” beams are to be rolled, partially shaped blooms are cast to shorten the rolling process.

Where ingot casting of carbon steel is still the only option, or in the case of certain highly specialized alloy steels where ingot casting produces higher quality material, blooms are rolled from cast ingot in a blooming mill.
