bull nose chile peppers

Bullnose is the name given to Cubanelle or Lamuyo-type sweet pepper cultivars, which have rounded single or double lobes as opposed to a point. There are multiple varieties of Lamuyo-type peppers, which is the term used to refer to elongated Bell peppers. The Lamuyo-types include ‘Gemini’, ‘Reina’, 'Yellow Fame', 'Mandarin', and 'Vidi'.

Bullnose peppers are twice as long as they are wide, and are shaped more like a chile pepper than a bell pepper. Most peppers are roughly 4-6” in length, 2” wide and weigh in around ¾ of a pound . They have a smooth, thick-walled skin that tapers to multiple lobes, or a “bullnose.” The peppers are crunchy and juicy. Bullnose peppers are sweet and do not typically have a heat rating. This style of sweet pepper is said to be sweeter than the blockier and stout bell peppers commonly found in the US. They range in color from yellow, to red to orange. When picked prior to maturation, the peppers are green.

Serving Ideas

Bullnose, or Lamuyo peppers are perfect for grilling, roasting and stuffing. The thick and sturdy peppers can be stuffed with cheeses or meats after the top is cut and ribs and seeds are removed. Slice fresh peppers into rings and add to salads or sautéed dishes. This style of pepper also holds up well to frying.

Geography/History

Elongated bell peppers are more common and popular in Europe, however they can be found around the world. Lamuyo-type peppers are found most often in Europe and are grown in Italy or Spain.

Seasons/Availability

Depending on the growing area, bullnose or Lamuyo-type peppers can be available year round, with a peak season in the summer and early fall.
