community fridge

Definition: a public refrigerator where individuals and businesses can donate edible food that may otherwise go to waste, so that it can be taken and consumed by others.

Context: A community fridge where people or businesses can share surplus food that would have been thrown away has opened in Somerset (BBC News 2016).

Context: Frome’s community fridge was launched in April 2016 after the town council’s resilience officer, Anna Francis, heard about solidarity fridges in Spain, where residents and restaurants can drop off food otherwise destined for the bin (Hall 2016).
